In Memory of Eljak Menjwak
The Burlington community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Eljak Menjwak, an 18-year-old rising senior at Burlington High School, who tragically lost his life in a drowning accident on June 21 2025, at Bartlett Falls in Bristol, Vermont.
Eljak was a bright and promising young man, known for his kind spirit, radiant smile, and gentle heart. He was deeply loved by his family, admired by his classmates, and respected by his teachers and peers both at BHS and the Burlington Technical Center (BTC). His presence brought light to every room, and his loss leaves an unimaginable void in the lives of all who knew him.
On that Saturday afternoon, Eljak was enjoying time near the New Haven River when he jumped into the water from Bartlett Falls and began to struggle. Despite the desperate efforts of those nearby and the swift response of rescue teams, he could not be saved. His body was recovered later that evening, and with it, a community’s heart was broken.
Principal Sabrina Westdijk shared, “He and his family are dear to many of us, both at BHS and BTC. This is a very hard loss for his family, friends, and our school and local community.”
In the wake of this tragedy, the Burlington School District has opened its doors to offer grief counseling and support for students and families, ensuring that no one has to grieve alone. It is a testament to the love Eljak inspired in those around him — a love that continues to surround his memory.
Though his time with us was far too brief, Eljak’s legacy of kindness, courage, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched. We remember him not for the way he died, but for the way he lived — with grace, laughter, and hope.
Rest in peace, Eljak. Your light will never fade.
You will always be remembered, always missed, and always loved.
