It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we mourn the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Richard Townsend, Jr., 53, and Jennifer Byers, 48, who tragically lost their lives in a motorcycle accident late Tuesday night in Sandy Township, Stark County.

Richard and Jennifer were sharing a moment of freedom on the open road, something they both deeply loved, when their journey was cut short. The crash, which occurred just before 11 p.m. on State Route 43, ended in devastating tragedy—leaving behind grieving families, stunned friends, and a community aching with loss.

Richard, a devoted friend, son, and father, was known for his bold spirit, kind heart, and passion for riding. He had a way of making people feel welcome, always quick with a laugh or a helping hand. Community Mourns the Loss of Sang Nguyen, 86, After Tragic Boating Accident

VENICE, LA —With heavy hearts, the Baton Rouge and Venice communities are mourning the tragic death of Sang Nguyen, an 86-year-old husband, father, and grandfather who lost his life during a fishing trip on June 21, 2025. After days of intense searching by family and rescue crews, Nguyen’s body was recovered near the accident site on June 24, bringing a heartbreaking end to a story that has shaken all who knew him.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the accident occurred near mile marker four in Venice, Louisiana, when a 21-foot fishing boat struck a submerged object while returning from an overnight trip. The impact caused the vessel to lurch violently, throwing Sang Nguyen and his son overboard. A third family member — Sang’s brother — was asleep in the boat at the time and woke to find them missing. He managed to turn the boat around and rescue Nguyen’s son, but tragically, Sang could not be saved.

The Coast Guard launched an extensive search, deploying rescue boats and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station New Orleans. For three days, crews scoured the water and surrounding area, fighting against strong currents, rising river levels, and challenging weather. Despite their efforts, Nguyen remained missing, and the official search was suspended on June 24.

Refusing to give up, Sang’s family continued searching. That same evening, their perseverance paid off when they discovered his body near the wreckage site.

His son, Garland Nguyen, shared the harrowing details of the incident and the immense emotional toll on the family.

“They were coming back from a night of fishing when they hit a floating log. It caused the motor to fail and the boat to veer sharply. My father and brother were thrown into the water. My uncle, who was asleep, turned the boat around as soon as he realized what happened, but by then my father had already gone under. My brother tried to hold on to him… but there’s only so much you can do.”

“He was 86, still strong, still sharp, still full of life. He loved to fish, loved his family, and lived every day with purpose.”

A fixture in his community, Sang Nguyen was admired for his humility, work ethic, and the love he poured into his family. To those who knew him, he was the embodiment of quiet strength and resilience — a man who had weathered life’s storms and gave his all to those he loved.

In a statement, the family extended their gratitude:

“We want to thank every single person who prayed, helped search, or offered support. Your kindness meant more than words can say. We’re grateful to the Coast Guard and local responders, and we’re thankful we could bring him home.”

Memorial arrangements are forthcoming, and the family asks for continued prayers as they prepare to honor a life that meant so much to so many.

Rest in peace, Sang Nguyen. Your love endures, your legacy lives on.

  • In Loving Memory of Josh Parten (1985–2025)

In Loving Memory of Josh Parten (1985–2025)

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we share the loss of Josh Parten, who passed away at the age of 39. A devoted friend, a passionate musician, and a true punk at heart, Josh’s passing leaves a void that words can scarcely fill.

For those of us who knew him, Josh wasn’t just someone who played music—he lived it. He breathed it. It ran through his veins like wildfire. From packed basement shows to long nights writing riffs and lyrics that cut deep, Josh gave everything to the art that gave him purpose. Music wasn’t a career or a phase—it was his calling.

As we approached his 40th birthday this July, Josh was looking ahead with the same energy and excitement that had carried him through life. He had plans—big ones. We were talking about jamming again, picking up where we left off, creating something real. The spark was still there, and it burned bright.

He talked often about recording new material, getting back into the studio, and doing what he loved most—making noise with meaning. That’s the thing about Josh: he never lost that fire. Even when life threw its hardest punches, he met them head-on—with music in his heart and passion in his soul.

Josh was a man of depth. A thinker. A fighter. Someone who showed up for others with loyalty, wit, and a generosity that never asked for anything in return. He believed in the power of truth, of sound, of showing up as you are and daring to be different.

His loss is devastating—not just for those of us who shared the stage or the garage, but for everyone who ever felt the raw honesty of his words or the steady beat of his heart in his music. He mattered. He made a difference. And the world feels a little less alive without him in it.

Josh, you may be gone from this world, but your legacy lives on—in the distortion, the lyrics, the brotherhood, and the wild, beautiful moments you helped create. We’ll carry your spirit in every note, every chorus, every heartbeat of the punk that still plays in our blood.

Rest easy, Josh. Your voice will never be silenced.
You were one of a kind. You are forever missed.

  • In Honor of Deputy Chief Firefighter Sam Deems

In Honor of Deputy Chief Firefighter Sam Deems

It is with the deepest sorrow and the heaviest of hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our own. Deputy Chief Sam Deems, age 25, was tragically killed in an automobile accident earlier today, Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

Sam was more than a firefighter—he was a beacon of courage, compassion, and service. In his time with the department, he rose to the role of Deputy Chief not just through dedication and hard work, but because of his character, leadership, and his unwavering love for his community.

From the very beginning, Sam served with passion and heart. He embodied everything a firefighter should be: brave, selfless, and deeply committed to the mission of protecting and saving lives. He met each challenge head-on, never wavering, and always putting others before himself.

But what truly made Sam special wasn’t just what he did—it was who he was:

    • He loved life, living each day with energy, laughter, and purpose.
    • He loved his family, who were his greatest pride and source of strength.
    • He loved his friends, always there with a listening ear, a helping hand, or a well-timed joke.
    • He loved his fire department and EMS family, forming bonds that ran deeper than duty.
    • And above all, he loved the Lord, walking in faith and leaning into grace, even in life’s most difficult moments.

Today, our department mourns not just a leader, but a brother. The void Sam leaves is immeasurable—his presence was the kind that made everyone around him feel stronger, safer, and seen. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the calls he answered, and the example he set.

As we begin to process this tragic loss, our thoughts turn to Sam’s wife, whose heartbreak is beyond words. In this time of unimaginable grief, we ask our community to lift her in prayer, offer support, and stand with her in love—just as Sam always stood for others.

There are no words that can truly capture what we’ve lost. But we hold on to the truth that Sam’s impact endures. His spirit will forever echo in the halls of our firehouse, in the hearts of those he served, and in the strength of the brotherhood he helped build.

Rest in peace, Deputy Chief Sam Deems.
Your watch is over, but your legacy will never fade.
We’ll carry the torch from here.
