Tragic Loss of Deputy Ryan Phillips

MI — With heavy hearts, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the untimely and tragic loss of Deputy Ryan Phillips, who passed away on June 7, 2025, following a fatal crash on the Lodge Freeway.

According to officials, Deputy Phillips was driving his SUV when the vehicle left the roadway, traveled up an embankment near Chicago Road, struck a tree, and rolled back onto the freeway. The SUV caught fire, and Deputy Phillips was ejected from the vehicle. He was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

This devastating loss has shaken the department and the community. Deputy Phillips was a dedicated public servant who embodied the values of integrity, courage, and compassion. He was known for his unwavering commitment to duty and his kind-hearted spirit that touched everyone he encountered.

“We are devastated,” the Sheriff’s Office shared in a statement. “Deputy Phillips was more than a colleague—he was family. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the honor of working alongside him. Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw reminded the public of the critical importance of seatbelt safety in the wake of the tragedy:

“We are reminding drivers to wear their seatbelts. Not only will it keep you behind the wheel, it will keep you inside the vehicle if it rolls over. This crash remains under investigation, pending further details and medical examiner reports.”
