Tragedy on I-97: South County Mourns the Loss of Two Young Men
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD – The South County community is mourning the tragic and untimely deaths of Thomas Oliver Sellman III, 30, of Churchton, and Marcus Eric James Jr., 29, of Shady Side, who were both killed in a fatal crash on Interstate 97 Tuesday night, June 17, 2025.
According to the Maryland State Police, the crash occurred around 9:03 p.m. when Sellman was driving a Dodge Durango northbound on I-97. For reasons still under investigation, the SUV veered off the right shoulder of the roadway, entered a wooded area, struck two trees, and overturned. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Emergency responders from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, along with state troopers and crash reconstruction experts, worked late into the night to investigate the scene and clear the wreckage. The Maryland State Police say the investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released regarding the cause of the crash. Authorities are still working to determine whether speed, impairment, distraction, or mechanical issues may have played a role.
The deaths of Sellman and James have sent waves of shock and grief through their respective communities. Friends and family describe Thomas Sellman, affectionately known as “Tommy,” as a hardworking, loyal, and deeply compassionate man. A native of Churchton, he was known for his big heart, sense of humor, and strong ties to his community. He was passionate about the outdoors, cars, and spending time with those he loved most.
Marcus “MJ” James Jr. was equally cherished in Shady Side, known for his infectious laugh, sharp wit, and a generous spirit that lifted those around him. He was a brother, a friend, and a role model to many, always willing to lend a hand or share a kind word. Those who knew Marcus speak of his magnetic energy and the way he could light up any room.
“They were more than friends—they were family,” said one friend. “Losing them both at once is unthinkable.”
Social media has been flooded with tributes, photos, and heartfelt messages as the community comes together to grieve and honor their memory. Candlelight vigils are already being discussed, and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
As families prepare to lay their sons, brothers, and friends to rest, the Maryland State Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact their office. Investigators are piecing together the final moments in hopes of bringing clarity and, ultimately, closure to those left behind.
This tragic accident is a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change. The loss of Thomas Sellman III and Marcus James Jr. has left an irreplaceable void in South County, where their absence will be deeply felt for years to come.
