Teen Killed, Driver Seriously Injured in Paulding County Crash
PAULDING COUNTY, OH — A tragic crash in the early hours of Sunday, June 8, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl and left an 18-year-old driver with serious injuries in Emerald Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The victim has been identified as Kaiya Klopfenstein, a resident of Defiance. Troopers say the crash occurred at approximately 1:09 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 133 and State Route 111.
According to the OSHP, the 18-year-old driver, a male from Oakwood, was heading north on County Road 133 when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the intersection with SR 111. After entering the intersection, the vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a tree.
Kaiya, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Troopers from the Van Wert Highway Patrol Post responded to the scene, along with emergency medical personnel. The crash remains under active investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether speed, distraction, or impairment may have played a role.
