Shoreham Community Mourns Sudden Death of Beloved Middle School Teacher
Shoreham, NY — April 25, 2025
The Shoreham-Wading River community is reeling after the sudden passing of a dedicated educator at Albert G. Prodell Middle School. The sixth-grade teacher, whose name has not yet been officially released, died Thursday, just two days after suffering a serious medical episode while on campus.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during school hours, in view of several students. School staff and emergency responders acted swiftly, administering aid before the teacher was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the teacher passed away on Thursday, leaving colleagues, students, and families devastated.
In a statement released by the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District, Superintendent Gerard Poole expressed the district’s deep sorrow:
“We are heartbroken by the loss of a valued member of our school family. This teacher was deeply committed to the students, the school, and the wider community. Their presence in the classroom left a lasting impact, and they will be sorely missed.”
Albert G. Prodell Middle School serves students in grades 6 through 8 and is known for its close-knit educational environment. Faculty and staff at the school are currently being supported by the district’s crisis response team, and grief counselors have been made available for students struggling to process the sudden loss.
The teacher was widely known and admired for their compassionate approach to teaching, fostering a love of learning, and building meaningful connections with students. Former pupils and parents have taken to social media to share memories and express condolences, describing the educator as “inspiring,” “always kind,” and “the heart of the sixth grade.”
Classes continued on Friday with a subdued atmosphere, as teachers and administrators worked to provide comfort and stability. A letter was also sent to parents outlining available resources and support services.
Plans for a memorial or tribute in honor of the teacher are underway, with more information to be shared by the district in the coming days.
The sudden nature of the incident has sent ripples through the entire Shoreham-Wading River community. As one parent put it, “It’s a loss for every student who had the privilege of being in that classroom. We are heartbroken but so grateful for the time we had with such a remarkable teacher.”
The community has been encouraged to support one another and to reach out to school counselors or district staff for emotional support.
