SACRAMENTO, CA — The Sacramento community is reeling from the devastating and untimely loss of Sayed Hakim Sultani, a Afghan immigrant who passed away while swimming at a local gym on the night of June 16, 2025.

Sultani was swimming at the 24 Hour Fitness facility around 10:00 p.m. when the tragedy occurred. Heartbreakingly, his body remained unnoticed in the pool for 15 to 20 minutes before it was discovered. Despite emergency response efforts, he could not be revived.

Just one year ago, Sultani arrived in the United States from Afghanistan, filled with hope for a new beginning. Like many immigrants seeking refuge from violence and instability, he dreamed of a life rooted in peace, opportunity, and purpose. Friends describe him as humble, hard-working, and full of potential—a young man committed to building a better future for himself and those he loved.

His death has sent shockwaves through Sacramento’s Afghan-American community and beyond. Many are grappling with the painful reality that his life ended so suddenly and quietly, in a public place, without anyone noticing in time to save him.

To help support his grieving family and cover funeral expenses, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched:

May Sayed Hakim Sultani’s memory be a blessing. May his family be surrounded by love and strength in this time of sorrow.
