Purdue University Student Identified in Apparent Suicide at Northwestern Parking Garage

West Lafayette, IN – The Purdue University community is mourning the tragic loss of a student who died by suicide at the Northwestern Avenue Parking Garage over the weekend. The student has been identified as Austin Davis Fisher, a dedicated and well-liked member of the Purdue academic community.

According to authorities, the incident occurred late Saturday evening during Purdue’s annual Homecoming weekend. Fisher, believed to be in his early 20s, was found after falling from an upper level of the parking structure. First responders arrived quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have confirmed that no foul play is suspected and have ruled the death an apparent suicide.

In a statement, Purdue University extended its condolences to Fisher’s family and friends, calling his death a heartbreaking loss. The university emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and reiterated its commitment to expanding support resources for students.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with Austin’s loved ones, and we encourage anyone in need to reach out for help. You are not alone.”

The tragedy has once again sparked concern among students and faculty about the availability and effectiveness of mental health services on campus. Many students are calling for broader mental health support, increased staffing for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and improved protocols for crisis intervention.

Fisher’s death marks another painful moment for a campus still healing from past losses. Student organizations and mental health advocates have announced plans for a candlelight vigil and a renewed push for systemic changes to mental health support at Purdue.
