Perry County School District and W.B. Muncy Elementary Mourn the Loss of Beloved Student Zane Lewis
PERRY COUNTY, KY — The Perry County School District and the W.B. Muncy Elementary School community are heartbroken following the devastating loss of Zane Lewis, a cherished student whose presence brought joy, kindness, and light to all who knew him.
Zane, remembered for his heart of gold and his ability to make everyone feel seen and valued, has left an indelible mark on his classmates, teachers, and the entire school family. His sudden passing has left the school community reeling, and his absence will be profoundly felt for years to come.
“Zane was the kind of student who made a lasting impression,” one teacher shared. “He had a smile that could light up a room and a genuine, kind spirit that radiated in everything he did. He was always willing to lend a hand, share a laugh, or offer a kind word to someone who needed it.”
Known for his warmth, gentle demeanor, and incredible sense of friendship, Zane was more than just a student — he was a role model to his peers and a reminder of the goodness that exists in young hearts. “We are all better people from our time spent with him,” said a classmate. “He showed us what it meant to be a true friend.”
Even though the district is currently on summer break, Perry County School District and W.B. Muncy Elementary School are committed to supporting students and staff through this difficult time. Grief counseling services will be made available at the school on Monday, June 9, for anyone in need of support. Licensed counselors will be on hand to provide a safe space for students, teachers, and families to process their grief and begin the healing journey together.
“We know that the grief from this loss will not go away overnight,” said Superintendent Jonathan Jett. “But as a school family, we will walk through this together — just as Zane would have done for any one of us.”
The district is also encouraging families to talk with their children about grief, loss, and the emotions they may be experiencing. Resources will be made available both at the school and online to help parents navigate these difficult conversations at home.
Plans to honor Zane’s memory in the coming weeks are already being discussed by school staff and community members. Tributes, moments of remembrance, and a potential memorial on campus are being considered, ensuring that his legacy will continue to live on in the halls of W.B. Muncy Elementary and beyond.
In the midst of unimaginable loss, the community is coming together — just as Zane so often brought people together in life. His memory will be cherished, his name spoken with love, and his impact felt for generations.
To the family of Zane Lewis, the entire Perry County school community offers its deepest condolences and heartfelt support during this time of grief. Zane will never be forgotten.
