  • Deadly Sniper Ambush on Canfield Mountain: Suspect Identified as Wess Roley

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – June 30, 2025 The community of Coeur d’Alene is reeling after a targeted sniper-style ambush on Canfield Mountain left two firefighters dead and another critically injured. Authorities have identified the suspected gunman as Wess Roley, whose body was discovered Sunday evening near a firearm believed to have been used in the attack.

According to investigators, the incident began when a brush fire was reported shortly after 1:21 p.m. on June 29 in the rugged terrain of Canfield Mountain, a popular outdoor recreation area located just four miles north of downtown Coeur d’Alene. Fire crews responded promptly to contain the blaze, unaware they were walking into a deadly trap.

Roughly 30 minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene, gunfire erupted. Authorities say Roley deliberately set the fire to lure first responders into an isolated area before opening fire from a concealed position.

Two firefighters — one with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, the other with Kootenai County Volunteer Search and Rescue — were killed in the ambush. A third firefighter sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted for emergency surgery. He remains hospitalized in stable condition, officials confirmed Monday.

The chaotic scene unfolded over several hours as law enforcement and tactical teams worked to locate the shooter and secure the area. Roley’s body was later found in the vicinity of the attack site, along with a weapon. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he died by suicide or was shot during the exchange.

“This was a calculated, violent act targeting those who put their lives on the line to serve and protect,” said Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris during a press conference. “The community is devastated. We’ve lost two heroes, and our hearts are with their families, colleagues, and everyone affected by this senseless tragedy.”

The identities of the fallen firefighters are being withheld pending family notification. Vigils and tributes are already being organized across the Coeur d’Alene area, with flowers and notes of condolence left at local fire stations.

The motive behind Roley’s actions remains under investigation. Local, state, and federal agencies — including the FBI and ATF — are assisting in piecing together the timeline and any possible prior threats or warning signs.

As the community begins to mourn and search for answers, officials are urging anyone with information about Roley or the events leading up to the attack to contact the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
