  • 22-Year-Old Lenoir County Man Shot in the Head by Stray Bullet While Doing Yard Work

22-Year-Old Lenoir County Man Shot in the Head by Stray Bullet While Doing Yard Work

LENOIR COUNTY, NC – A peaceful Saturday afternoon turned into a nightmare on June 21, 2025, when 22-year-old Tucker Williams was struck in the head by a stray bullet while tending to his yard in the 3300 block of Fountain Hill Drive.

At approximately 5:29 PM, deputies with the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) responded to reports of a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Williams suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Shockingly, the young man had been simply blowing off his driveway when he was hit.

Investigators quickly determined that the shot had been fired from across a wooded area at 6960 Skeeter Pond Road, where six individuals had been engaged in target shooting. A relative of the victim confronted the group and informed them of the incident, but the six fled the area before deputies could arrive.

Coordination between law enforcement agencies led to a critical breakthrough. Pitt County officers and members of the Greenville Police Department located four of the six individuals during a traffic stop in Greenville, NC. Lenoir County detectives responded and arrested the four men on the scene, also recovering multiple handguns from the vehicle.

    The individuals arrested were:

    • Drequan Reid (27) of Greenville, NC — Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M) | $2,500 unsecured bond
    • Tyrell Shavon Barnhill (26) of Greenville, NC — Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M) | $2,500 unsecured bond
    • Tymize Dyrell Barnhill (25) of Greenville, NC — Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M) | $2,500 unsecured bond
    • Tyshawn Dodd (28) of Greenville, NC — Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M) | $2,500 unsecured bond

Arrest warrants were also issued for the remaining two individuals:

    • Jordan Daniels (19) of Greenville, NC — Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M)
    • Daryl Antwan Boyd (25) of Greenville, NC — Possession of Firearm by Felon and Assault with a Deadly Weapon (M)

Despite the traumatic nature of the incident, Mr. Williams was treated and released from ECU Health Medical Center. Authorities emphasized that the shooting appeared to be unintentional, but highlighted the gross negligence of the individuals involved in target shooting near a residential area.

“This could have easily been a fatality,” said a spokesperson for LCSO. “Handling firearms irresponsibly can have devastating consequences, as this incident clearly shows. We urge the public to take safety seriously and remember that reckless behavior with weapons will be met with legal accountability.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and further charges may be forthcoming. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Jayden Hunter Hicks Fatally Shot by Friend in Accidental Shooting on Hutchins Way

Jayden Hunter Hicks Fatally Shot by Friend in Accidental Shooting on Hutchins Way

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A devastating and avoidable tragedy unfolded early Sunday morning just outside the Town of Faith, when 19-year-old Jayden Hunter Hicks was fatally shot by a friend who believed a rifle was not loaded. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident, which has left a community in shock and two families forever changed.

Authorities received a 911 call at 5:02 a.m. from Colton Alexander Adkins, 19, who told dispatchers he had accidentally shot his friend. Deputies and emergency responders rushed to a residence in the 100 block of Hutchins Way, where they discovered Hicks with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 a.m.

According to statements provided to investigators, Adkins and Hicks had been spending time together, listening to music in Adkins’ bedroom. At some point, Adkins picked up a rifle that had been resting in the corner of the room. Believing the weapon was not loaded, he pointed it in Hicks’ direction and pulled the trigger.

The firearm discharged, striking Hicks. In a panic, Adkins called 911 and followed instructions from the dispatcher to attempt life-saving measures until first responders arrived. Sadly, Hicks did not survive.

Detectives from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside agents from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), processed the scene and conducted interviews to confirm the sequence of events. After a thorough review, Adkins was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter.

He was transported to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, where he was issued a $10,000 bond before being taken into custody.

A Painful Reminder of Firearm Responsibility

The tragic death of Jayden Hunter Hicks highlights the deadly consequences of mishandling firearms, especially among young adults. Officials stress that firearms should always be treated as if they are loaded, and never pointed at another person under any circumstance.

This incident remains under investigation, and officials have not indicated whether further charges may be filed. Community members are mourning the loss of a young life with so much potential, and calling for greater awareness around gun safety and accountability.

As two families grieve and a community reflects, this tragedy serves as a heartbreaking reminder that one careless decision can change everything in an instant.

  • In Loving Memory of Cooper Hill

In Loving Memory of Cooper Hill

It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we share the passing of one of our beloved students, 15-year-old Cooper Hill. Cooper passed away on Friday, June 20, leaving behind a wave of grief that has swept through Lee Academy and the wider Marianna community. This loss is felt deeply by all who knew and loved him.

Cooper was more than a student—he was a bright light in our school and in the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His presence was one of joy, kindness, and authenticity. Known for his warm smile, his easygoing spirit, and his genuine heart, Cooper made everyone feel like a friend. He was the kind of young man who could brighten a room with just a few words or a quick grin—always approachable, always kind, and always full of life.

To his peers, Cooper was a loyal friend and a dependable “buddy” who never hesitated to offer a helping hand or a listening ear. To his teachers and mentors, he was a respectful and engaged student—curious, capable, and driven by a desire to do well and be his best. He was loved not only for what he did but for who he was: humble, thoughtful, and caring.

Cooper had a deep love for his family and friends. His bond with his loved ones was unbreakable and evident in everything he did. He spoke with pride about those closest to him, and he carried their love with him wherever he went. His devotion to those around him was a reflection of the values instilled in him and the kindness that radiated from his core.

He was also passionate about basketball—a sport that brought out his competitive edge, his teamwork, and his joy. On the court, Cooper played with heart and determination. Off the court, he inspired others with his dedication and support for his teammates. Basketball wasn’t just a game for Cooper—it was a part of who he was.

In addition to his athletic spirit, Cooper had a special place in his heart for all things country. He loved country music, the outdoors, and the simplicity of a life rooted in tradition and family. Whether it was a song that told a good story, a quiet moment under the open sky, or just being with those he loved most, Cooper found beauty in life’s most genuine moments.

His passing is an immeasurable loss, not only to the Hill family but to everyone at Lee Academy and throughout Marianna. We stand together in mourning, united in sorrow but also in gratitude for the time we had with Cooper. Even in this pain, we choose to remember him not only for how he left us, but for how fully and beautifully he lived.

To the Hill family: our hearts are with you. We extend our deepest condolences and lift you up in prayer and support. May you find comfort in knowing that Cooper was deeply loved by so many, and that his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

To our students, staff, and community: let us hold each other close during this incredibly difficult time. Let us honor Cooper’s life by living with the same kindness, compassion, and strength that he showed every day. Let us remember him not with sadness alone, but with love and appreciation for all he gave us.

Cooper Hill’s time with us was far too short, but the impact he made will last forever. We will never forget his smile, his spirit, and the light he brought to our lives.
