One Dead Following Shooting at Huntsville Apartment Complex

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — One person is dead following a shooting saturday evening at the Belmont Hill Apartments in southwest Huntsville.

Huntsville Police say the incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. at 240 Martin Road SW. Officers responding to the scene found 53-year-old Demetrius Jones suffering from gunshot wounds at the entrance to his apartment. Despite emergency efforts, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have arrested 22-year-old Byron Alexander Peterson in connection with the shooting. Investigators say Peterson and Jones had been involved in an ongoing dispute over the past several months. On Monday, that conflict escalated when Peterson allegedly went to Jones’ apartment and the confrontation turned violent.

Police later located Peterson in a nearby apartment and took him into custody without incident. A firearm was recovered from both Peterson’s residence and Jones’ apartment as part of the investigation.

The Huntsville Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
