Nicholas Collelo Remembered After Tragic Dirt Bike Crash in Plainfield
The town of Plainfield is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nicholas Collelo, 24, who tragically lost his life on the evening of Monday, June 16, following a crash involving his dirt bike and a Jeep Wrangler on Norwich Road (Route 12).
Authorities say the collision occurred around 7:08 p.m., when Nicholas, a Norwich Road resident, was traveling northbound on his dirt bike. Under circumstances still under investigation, his bike crossed into the southbound lane and collided with an oncoming 2015 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 22-year-old woman from Brooklyn, Connecticut. She remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with law enforcement.
First responders arrived quickly after multiple 911 calls were made. Nicholas was found unconscious in the roadway and was transported to Plainfield Backus Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.
Nicholas’s death has cast a pall of grief over the Plainfield community, where he was known and loved. His tragic passing highlights the serious risks associated with riding dirt bikes on public roads—vehicles that, while agile and powerful, offer minimal protection in the event of a crash.
The Plainfield Police Department, led by Lieutenant Troy A. Gelinas, is actively investigating the crash. Authorities are examining whether speed, road conditions, or mechanical issues may have contributed to the loss of control. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police at 860-564-0804, as even the smallest details may help piece together the full story.
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed, and there is no evidence to suggest impairment or reckless behavior. The Jeep driver continues to cooperate as investigators work to determine the facts.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community is rallying around Nicholas’s family and loved ones. Conversations have begun around how to better protect riders—calling for safer infrastructure, awareness campaigns, and perhaps designated off-road riding areas.
- A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched by friends and family members to help cover funeral expenses and support the Collelo family during this unimaginable time. While the loss is immeasurable, the outpouring of love and support from neighbors, friends, and strangers alike is a powerful reminder that Nicholas will never be forgotten.
