Family Tragedy: Mother Killed by Son, Who Was Then Fatally Shot by His Brother, Police Say

A shocking and heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Mobile on Sunday evening, where a violent family altercation claimed the lives of a mother and one of her sons, leaving a community reeling and another son facing unimaginable loss.

According to the Mobile Police Department, officers responded to a home on Ross Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. on June 8, 2025, where they discovered two people deceased inside the residence. The victims were identified as 52-year-old Traci McDuffie and her 25-year-old son, Brandon McDuffie.

Investigators say Brandon fatally shot his mother inside the home. Moments later, Traci’s other son arrived and discovered the tragic scene. Police say Brandon then turned his weapon on his brother and fired. The brother, acting in what authorities are calling self-defense, returned fire and fatally shot Brandon.

The Mobile Police confirmed that the death of Traci McDuffie is considered abated, meaning that no charges will be pursued in her killing because the suspect, Brandon, is also deceased. The circumstances surrounding Brandon McDuffie’s death will be presented to a grand jury to determine if any legal action is warranted, though officials have indicated that it appears to have been a justified response.

“This is an incredibly difficult and tragic situation for the family and all those involved,” Mobile Police said in a public statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this loss.”

The incident has left the neighborhood in shock, as what began as a quiet Sunday turned into a scene of unimaginable violence.

“It’s heartbreaking to think about a family being torn apart like this,” said a neighbor. “No one expects something like this to happen so close to home.”

As the investigation continues, police are working closely with victim services to provide support to surviving family members. The case remains under review, and further updates will be shared as new details become available.
