Milwaukee Native and Former Badgers Player Nate White Remembered at 21
MILWAUKEE, WI — The city of Milwaukee and the football community across Wisconsin are mourning the loss of Nate White, a former University of Wisconsin Badgers running back, who passed away at the age of 21.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Nate was a proud graduate of Rufus King High School, where he shined both in the classroom and on the football field. His speed, vision, and natural athleticism quickly earned him statewide recognition and a spot as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023. That same year, he achieved a lifelong dream by committing to play for the Wisconsin Badgers.
During his time in Madison, Nate was admired not only for his talent but for his humility, work ethic, and quiet leadership. Though he didn’t see the field in his first two seasons, he remained dedicated to his team and his growth as both a player and a student-athlete. In December 2024, Nate announced his decision to transfer to South Dakota State University, where he looked forward to new opportunities and a fresh start.
His passing was confirmed by South Dakota State officials on Wednesday, June 25. He was in Brookings, South Dakota at the time.
In a heartfelt statement, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell said,
“News of Nate White’s tragic passing has been sad and difficult to comprehend for all of the Wisconsin Badger football family. We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and we stand in support of Nate’s family and loved ones.”
To those who knew him best, Nate was much more than an athlete. He was a devoted son, a loyal friend, and a thoughtful young man who carried himself with quiet strength and dignity. He inspired others through his perseverance and the pride he took in representing Milwaukee, always remembering where he came from.
The outpouring of grief and remembrance across social media reflects just how deeply Nate’s presence was felt — not just in the locker room, but in classrooms, neighborhoods, and communities throughout the state.
Rest in peace, Nate White. You will forever be remembered — not only for the promise you held, but for the grace, kindness, and heart with which you lived.
