Man Killed in Sunday Morning Shooting in Hartwell: Police Investigating

HARTWELL, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in the Hartwell neighborhood of Cincinnati, leaving one man dead and prompting an outpouring of concern from the community.

According to the Cincinnati Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Woodbine Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m. on May 4, 2025, after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency lifesaving efforts, the victim—identified as 40-year-old Jorrie Hope—was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have not yet released details about what led up to the shooting or whether a suspect has been identified. However, police have confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“This is a tragic incident that has impacted not only the victim’s family but the entire community,” a police spokesperson said during a brief statement Sunday afternoon. “We are committed to finding out exactly what happened and holding those responsible accountable.”

Hartwell residents say they are shaken by the violence, especially as the community has seen a troubling rise in gun-related incidents in recent years. Sunday’s shooting is the latest in a series of homicides that have occurred in the area, with previous shootings in 2023 and 2024 still fresh in the minds of many.

In July 2024, 19-year-old Bairon Chaj was fatally shot near the Hartwell Recreation Center. A year earlier, in July 2023, 39-year-old Alan Davis Holcomb was found shot to death at The Williamsburg Apartments in what police described as a targeted attack. That case also remains unsolved, and Holcomb’s family continues to seek justice.

Now, with the death of Jorrie Hope, another family is mourning a loved one whose life was taken too soon. Friends and relatives describe him as a kind and hardworking man who loved his family and was known for helping others in his neighborhood.

As investigators piece together the events that led to this latest act of violence, the Cincinnati Police Department is asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area is encouraged to contact the CPD Homicide Unit at (513) 352-3542. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.

Community leaders are calling for unity and cooperation to stop the spread of violence and ensure safer neighborhoods across Cincinnati.

“We must come together to support one another and bring those responsible to justice,” one resident said. “We can’t allow violence to define our community.”

The investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available.
