Man in Serious Condition After Daylight Shooting in Waterbury

WATERBURY, Conn — A man is in serious but stable condition after being shot in broad daylight on Sunday, June 8, in Waterbury. Police say the victim was dropped off at Saint Mary’s Hospital shortly after 2:00 p.m., suffering from a gunshot wound. The incident has sparked an intense investigation and renewed concern from the community as gun violence continues to affect the city.

According to officials, the shooting took place in the area of Macauley Avenue and Pritchard Road, a neighborhood typically known for its quiet residential setting. It is still unclear whether the victim was shot while on foot or in a vehicle, and police have not yet identified a suspect or a possible motive.

The victim’s identity has not been released, but authorities say he remains under medical care in serious but stable condition. Detectives from the Waterbury Police Department were seen canvassing the area Sunday afternoon, speaking to neighbors and searching for surveillance footage that might provide leads in the case. Officers also collected physical evidence at the scene, including shell casings, though the exact number of shots fired has not been disclosed.

This incident marks yet another act of gun violence that has shaken Waterbury residents in recent months. Community members voiced frustration and sadness at the growing number of violent events, many of which are taking place during daytime hours and in residential areas where children and families live.

“This is terrifying,” said one local resident who asked not to be named. “We need more patrols, more community engagement — something to stop these shootings before someone else’s child or parent is taken.”

City leaders and anti-violence advocates echoed that sentiment, calling for continued support for intervention programs and youth outreach, especially as summer begins — a time when cities often see spikes in violent crime.

Waterbury Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area of Macauley Avenue and Pritchard Road around the time of the shooting to come forward. Any witnesses, surveillance footage, or tips — even anonymous — could prove critical in helping investigators determine who is responsible.

Tips can be directed to the Waterbury Police Department Detective Bureau at (203) 574-6941 or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

As the victim continues to fight for recovery, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting may be linked to other recent incidents, and they are working with nearby jurisdictions to determine whether there are any related patterns.

Authorities urge the public to remain aware and cautious, and to contact police if they observe suspicious behavior or hear gunshots in their neighborhoods.
