It is with solemn reflection that we remember the life and legacy of Joshua “Josh” Baker, who tragically passed away at the age of 33 on August 17, 1903, in a devastating streetcar collision. A devoted employee of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway Company, Josh had served the community faithfully for over seven years.

Known for his unwavering dedication and sense of duty, Josh’s final act was one of extraordinary bravery. In the face of danger, he remained at the controls of his streetcar in an effort to minimize the impact of the collision—an ultimate display of courage that speaks volumes of his character and selflessness.

A funeral service was held at the Christian Church in Carthage, where loved ones, friends, and members of the community gathered to pay their respects and celebrate a life defined by honor, service, and sacrifice.
