Marion, Indiana – April 22, 2025 — A deep sense of grief hangs over the Marion community following the tragic loss of 17-year-old Julio Matamoros, affectionately known to many as “Lio.” The promising high school student and talented athlete was fatally shot on Monday, April 21, during a meeting that turned violent—an incident that has stunned friends, family, and neighbors alike.
According to local authorities, Lio had arranged to meet another individual for the sale of vape cartridges, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control. At some point during the encounter, gunfire broke out, striking Julio and ending his life far too soon. Despite efforts by emergency responders, Lio was pronounced dead at the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police continue to seek information from the public to help bring those responsible to justice.
Lio’s untimely death has left an immense void in the hearts of those who knew him. A junior at Marion High School, he was not only a standout student but also a gifted baseball player whose passion for the sport was undeniable. Coaches and teammates remember him as a fierce competitor with a kind heart, someone who worked hard, encouraged others, and dreamed big.
“He had the kind of energy that lifted everyone around him,” said one of his teammates. “You couldn’t help but smile when Lio was around. He was always cracking jokes, always pushing us to do our best.”
Teachers describe him as driven and respectful, with a quiet leadership that made a lasting impression. Outside of school and sports, Julio was known for being a devoted brother, a loyal friend, and a young man with hopes of going to college and building a better future for himself and his family.
The shock of his loss has sparked a wave of support throughout the community. Vigils are being planned, and tributes have been pouring in across social media, where classmates and loved ones are sharing their memories and honoring the impact Julio had on their lives. Marion High School has made grief counselors available to students struggling to process the tragedy.
Julio’s family, devastated by the loss, released a brief statement asking for privacy as they mourn. “Julio was full of love, full of life, and had so much ahead of him. Our hearts are broken. We thank everyone for the support, prayers, and love during this unimaginable time.”
Community leaders are also speaking out, calling for increased efforts to educate young people about the dangers of illegal transactions and the growing concern of youth gun violence. Mayor Sarah Blake emphasized the need for unity and action in the wake of such a devastating loss.
“We must come together—not only to grieve but to protect,” Mayor Blake said. “Julio’s life mattered. We owe it to him, and to every young person in this city, to create a future that’s safer, brighter, and filled with opportunity.”
As the investigation continues, anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Marion Police Department. A reward has been offered for tips that lead to an arrest.
Julio “Lio” Matamoros may be gone, but his spirit—on the field, in the classroom, and in the lives of those who loved him—will never be forgotten. He was a young man with a bright future, a big heart, and a legacy that will live on in the community he helped shape with his presence.
May he rest in peace.
