The Spartanburg County community is mourning the heartbreaking and tragic loss of 17-year-old Kory Nathaniel Fredericks of Duncan, South Carolina, who was fatally shot early Sunday morning, June 22 2025. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed Kory’s passing at 2:47 a.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following a shooting outside Academy Sports + Outdoors on Peachwood Center Drive.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene late Saturday night after reports of gunfire in the parking lot. Upon arrival, they found two victims—Kory, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and another individual who remains hospitalized, also in critical condition. Sadly, despite life-saving efforts, Kory succumbed to his injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a large gathering had taken place in the parking lot prior to the shooting. Authorities are currently working to determine the sequence of events that led to this senseless act of violence. Law enforcement officials are urging anyone who was present during the gathering or has information about the incident to contact the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office at 864-503-4555.
