It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George Duncan Hastie McMillan Jr., affectionately known as George McMillan, who died on April 18, 2025, at the age of 81. A lifelong advocate for Alabama and a cherished friend to many, George’s legacy of service, innovation, and community engagement will continue to inspire future generations.


Early Life and Education

Born on October 11, 1943, in Greenville, Alabama, George McMillan was the son of George D.H. and Jean Autrey McMillan. He pursued higher education with dedication, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Auburn University in 1966, graduating magna cum laude. He furthered his studies at the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor in 1969. Upon completing his education, George was admitted to the Alabama State Bar and began his legal career, which included clerking for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama and teaching at the University of Alabama Law School .


Political Career and Public Service

George McMillan’s commitment to public service began in the early 1970s. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives for one term in 1973, followed by a term in the Alabama State Senate from 1974 to 1978. His dedication and hard work were recognized when he was named “Alabama’s Hardest Working Senator” in 1976 and one of the “Ten Most Outstanding Legislators in the Nation” in 1978 .

In 1978, George was elected as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of Alabama, serving from 1979 to 1983 under Governor Fob James. His tenure was marked by a focus on efficiency and innovation within the state’s government. Although he ran for governor in 1982, he was defeated by former Governor George C. Wallace in the Democratic primary .


Contributions to the Arts and Community

Beyond his political achievements, George McMillan made significant contributions to Alabama’s cultural landscape. In 1989, he founded the City Stages music festival in downtown Birmingham, which became a beloved annual event, showcasing a diverse array of musical talent and drawing visitors from across the region. He also established the Birmingham Cultural and Heritage Foundation, further cementing his commitment to enriching the state’s cultural heritage .


Personal Life and Legacy

George McMillan was married to Ann Louise Dial, and together they had two children: George D.H. McMillan III and Ann Dial McMillan. Throughout his life, George was known for his integrity, vision, and unwavering dedication to the people of Alabama. His friendship with Governor Kay Ivey dates back to their student government days at Auburn University, and she fondly remembered him as a man of great ideas and a treasured public servant .

Governor Ivey expressed her deep sadness over his passing, stating, “He treasured being in public service and was a man of great ideas throughout his life, especially while he served our state as lieutenant governor and in the Legislature. My prayers are with him and his loved ones. He will be greatly missed!”
