Beloved Coach, Mentor, and Champion of Young Athletes
With profound sorrow, we announce the untimely passing of Jami Strinz, the beloved head softball coach at Umpqua Community College, who tragically lost their life in a traffic accident while returning home from a competition. Jami was not only a cornerstone of UCC’s athletic program, but a guiding light for generations of student-athletes who had the privilege of learning, growing, and competing under their care.
Jami’s impact reached far beyond wins and losses. While they were a fierce competitor and a strategic mind on the field, it was their unwavering belief in their players, their commitment to character, and the values they instilled that defined Jami’s coaching legacy. Every practice, every game, and every huddle was a chance to teach more than just softball—it was a chance to teach resilience, leadership, teamwork, and confidence.
Known for their passionate coaching style, sharp wit, and huge heart, Jami created a culture of excellence that was always grounded in love. Players often spoke about how Jami saw their potential before they could see it themselves. To Jami, every athlete was more than a number on a roster—they were a person worthy of being seen, supported, and empowered.
A lifelong advocate for the growth of women’s sports and student development, Jami’s influence extended well beyond the diamond. Former players, fellow coaches, and colleagues across the Pacific Northwest and beyond remember Jami as a mentor, a motivator, and a friend. Their coaching tree is wide and filled with success stories—young women who went on to be not just athletes, but leaders, educators, and community builders.
In the wake of this tragic loss, the Umpqua Community College family and the wider softball community are grieving deeply. The softball field that once echoed with Jami’s voice—calling out encouragement, giving direction, sharing laughter—now stands in quiet remembrance of someone who gave everything they had to the game and the people in it.
Jami’s love for the sport was rivaled only by their love for their team. Whether during early morning practices, long bus rides, or tough losses, Jami led with grace, grit, and unwavering support. Plans to honor and celebrate Jami’s life will be announced by the college in the coming days. There will be time set aside to gather as a community, to grieve together, to share memories, and to ensure that the tremendous contributions of Coach Strinz are never forgotten.
