Firefighting Community Mourns Two Fallen Heroes in Canfield Mountain Tragedy

COEUR D’ALENE, ID — Two highly respected firefighters were tragically killed in a shooting incident Sunday on Canfield Mountain, sending shockwaves through the local community and beyond. Authorities have identified the victims as Frank Harwood, 42, Chief of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, and Battalion Chief John Morrison of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department.

At a press conference held Monday, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Christopher Way honored Harwood’s memory, describing him as a dedicated leader who gave 17 years of service to the department. A veteran of the Army National Guard where he served as a combat engineer, Harwood was also a devoted husband and father of two.

“Frank was the kind of leader who not only earned respect—he inspired it,” Way said. “He led with integrity, compassion, and strength. Our department is devastated.”

John Morrison was a cornerstone of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, where he served for more than 28 years. Starting his career as a firefighter, Morrison rose through the ranks with steadfast dedication, ultimately becoming battalion chief. Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief Tom Greif reflected on Morrison’s enduring impact.

“John was the definition of a public servant. He led by example, mentored generations of firefighters, and gave his life to this community,” Greif said.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation. Authorities have not yet released full details, but the incident has been described as senseless and deeply shocking.

In a statement shared by his attorney, Tony Cuchiara—the stepfather of the suspect—expressed his family’s grief and confusion:

“We do not understand why this happened or how this came about. Our hearts and spirits are broken for the lost and hurting, and for our own loss as well.”

Cuchiara added that his family is cooperating fully with investigators and extended their condolences to the victims’ families and the fire service community.

As the investigation continues, the City of Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai County, and the entire firefighting community are united in mourning. Flags are flying at half-staff, and memorial services for both Harwood and Morrison are being planned.

Frank Harwood and John Morrison are remembered not only for their decades of courageous service, but for the lives they touched, the teams they led, and the communities they protected. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
