It is with profound sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that we share the devastating news of the untimely passing of our beloved brother, Isaiah Caldwell, a proud member of the Great Dane Chapter, Fall 2021 line.
Isaiah’s promising life was tragically and senselessly cut short due to an act of indiscriminate gun violence during Elizabeth City State University’s Viking Fest celebrations. What should have been a joyful evening of camaraderie and community turned into a heartbreaking tragedy that has left an entire campus, and countless friends and family members, grieving an unimaginable loss.
On the evening of Saturday, April 26, 2025, Isaiah was participating in the festivities, simply doing what so many students look forward to — celebrating, connecting, and creating memories. He was fellowshipping with classmates and bonding with fellow Vikings when chaos erupted. Individuals unaffiliated with the university began firing weapons on campus grounds, and in the midst of that senseless violence, Isaiah’s vibrant life was taken from us.
Isaiah was known far and wide for his infectious smile, unwavering kindness, and profound ability to bring people together. As a brother in the Great Dane Chapter, he exemplified the values of leadership, brotherhood, service, and excellence. He was someone who lifted those around him, who offered encouragement in difficult times, and who lived each day with a spirit of joy, purpose, and generosity. His presence was a blessing to everyone he encountered, and his absence will be felt deeply for years to come.
In classrooms, Isaiah’s intelligence and curiosity stood out. In service, his dedication was unwavering. Among his friends and brothers, his loyalty and compassion were unmatched. To his family, he was a beloved son, brother, and role model — a young man with dreams and the determination to achieve them. His loss is a devastating reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for action against senseless violence.
Elizabeth City State University officials, alongside law enforcement, have launched a full investigation into the events that led to this tragedy. Efforts are ongoing to ensure justice is served and that the university community can heal and rebuild after such a shocking violation of safety and trust.
As we mourn Isaiah, we also honor his extraordinary life and the light he brought into the world. Plans are underway to hold a memorial service in his honor, where friends, family, classmates, and brothers will come together to celebrate his legacy and the many ways he made the world a better place.
In the coming days, we will share more details about opportunities to support Isaiah’s family, including ways to assist with funeral arrangements and to establish scholarships or community initiatives that will carry on his spirit of leadership, service, and unity.
To lose someone like Isaiah is to lose a piece of our collective heart. Yet even in this darkest hour, we remember the strength, love, and resilience he embodied. We will carry Isaiah’s memory forward — not with bitterness, but with the fierce commitment to live lives of purpose, kindness, and brotherhood, just as he did.
Rest in power, Brother Isaiah Caldwell. You are deeply loved, profoundly missed, and forever remembered.
