  • Ron Acosta, Founder of Las Palapas, Tragically Killed in San Antonio; Nephew Charged with Murder

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The San Antonio community is mourning the loss of Edward “Ron” Acosta, the 78-year-old founder of the beloved Las Palapas Tex-Mex restaurant chain, after he was brutally murdered in his home on Tuesday morning, July 1, 2025.

Acosta, a well-known and respected entrepreneur, was found stabbed to death in the garage of his home in a gated community on the city’s north side. According to authorities, the suspect is his 39-year-old nephew, David Ruiz, who has since been arrested and charged with murder.

Police say the attack followed a heated argument between the two men. Acosta’s housekeeper, who was present at the time, told investigators she heard the victim pleading, “No, David! No, David!” before discovering him bloodied and unresponsive. She immediately called 911.

By the time law enforcement arrived, Ruiz had fled the scene. A manhunt led to his arrest hours later in Kimble County, northwest of San Antonio.

The incident has left family members stunned and devastated. Ruiz’s father, James Ruiz, told the San Antonio Express-News that his son had been struggling with severe mental health issues in the days leading up to the killing. He said he feared for his son’s safety — but never imagined he would harm someone else.

“I thought I was going to lose him to suicide,” James said. “I never thought he’d hurt someone — especially not Ronnie. He just completely snapped.”

James added that he had installed a deadbolt on his bedroom door out of fear and was alarmed when David asked a relative to purchase a gun during his trip to Texas. That request was denied. After learning about the murder, James urged his son via text to turn himself in. David reportedly responded, “Oh, you’re crazy!”

Police say David Ruiz had no prior meaningful relationship with Acosta, and a motive for the killing has not been publicly confirmed. He remains in custody, and his legal proceedings are pending.

Ron Acosta founded Las Palapas in 1981, building it into a well-known chain cherished for its Tex-Mex offerings and community atmosphere. His passion for food, people, and business helped shape a legacy that spans over four decades.

The restaurant group issued a statement following his death, saying in part:

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our founder, mentor, and friend. Ron’s vision created more than a restaurant — he built a family. His kindness, leadership, and spirit will never be forgotten.”

The San Antonio community, along with the Las Palapas family, continues to grieve this unimaginable loss — the death of a man who brought flavor, generosity, and heart to everything he touched.

  • Roswell Man Paul Sedillo-Reyes Charged in Fatal Shooting of Nadia Madrid

ROSWELL, N.M. — A Roswell man has been charged in connection with the tragic shooting death of 46-year-old Nadia Madrid, following a domestic incident that unfolded Tuesday night, July 1. The suspect, 53-year-old Paul Sedillo-Reyes, is facing multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, after authorities say he shot and killed Madrid at a residence the two shared in southeast Roswell.

Roswell Police Department officers were dispatched to a home in the 1600 block of South Mulberry Avenue around 9:25 p.m. after Sedillo-Reyes called 911, reporting that his girlfriend had been shot. When officers arrived, they found Madrid lying outside the residence with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Initially, Sedillo-Reyes told officers he had found Madrid injured outside. However, a thorough investigation by the RPD Criminal Investigations Division quickly uncovered inconsistencies in his account. Evidence collected at the scene—including blood patterns, ballistics, and recovered firearms—indicated that the shooting had actually taken place inside the home.

Two guns believed to be involved were recovered from the scene, along with additional evidence supporting the conclusion that the fatal shots were fired indoors. Authorities say both Sedillo-Reyes and Madrid were residing in the home at the time of the incident and had a history of an on-and-off relationship, which may have contributed to the deadly encounter.

Following the execution of a search warrant and further evidence collection, Sedillo-Reyes was formally arrested around 6:30 a.m. on July 2. He has since been booked into the Chaves County Detention Center and is now facing the following charges:

    • First-degree murder
    • Tampering with evidence
    • Felon in possession of a firearm

The Roswell Police Department confirmed that Sedillo-Reyes is a convicted felon and was not legally allowed to possess firearms.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, with detectives working to piece together the full circumstances surrounding Madrid’s death. Authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the case to contact the Roswell Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

The death of Nadia Madrid has left her loved ones and the community in mourning. Her life, taken so violently, is a painful reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the need for continued awareness, support, and intervention.

  • Fatal Crash in Rockingham County Under Investigation by Virginia State Police

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. – A tragic motor vehicle crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning has claimed the life of a Timberville man and left another seriously injured. Virginia State Police (VSP) are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, which took place on North Valley Pike, a well-traveled thoroughfare in Rockingham County.

According to an official release from the Virginia State Police, the accident involved two vehicles: an Infiniti Q50 sedan and a Hyundai Tucson SUV. The initial findings indicate that the Infiniti Q50 was traveling northbound on North Valley Pike when it crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic. As a result, the Infiniti collided head-on with the southbound Hyundai Tucson. The force of the impact caused the Tucson to veer off the right side of the roadway.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Tragically, the driver of the Hyundai Tucson, identified as 30-year-old Damian A. Siever of Timberville, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. According to authorities, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

The driver of the Infiniti, 28-year-old David J. Siever, also from Timberville, sustained serious injuries but survived the crash. Officials noted that he was wearing a seatbelt, which likely helped mitigate the impact of the collision for him.

While the full details of the crash are still being pieced together, VSP stated that fatigue is being considered as a potential contributing factor. Investigators have not released information indicating whether drugs, alcohol, or excessive speed played a role in the incident, but emphasized that the case remains under active investigation.

The relationship between the two drivers — who share the same last name and hometown — has not been confirmed by authorities at this time.

This devastating accident highlights once again the dangers of drowsy or fatigued driving, particularly on rural roads where traffic is sparse and long stretches of uninterrupted driving can increase the risk of losing focus or falling asleep at the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), driver fatigue is a significant cause of serious traffic crashes each year across the United States, especially during the early morning hours.

Virginia State Police continue to urge drivers to remain alert, wear seatbelts, and avoid getting behind the wheel when feeling drowsy. Seatbelt usage remains a critical factor in surviving serious vehicle crashes, and Sunday’s tragic event underscores the importance of buckling up — no matter the distance or familiarity with the road.

Anyone with information about the crash or who may have witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact Virginia State Police as the investigation continues.
