Bismarck Police Officer Cleared in Fatal Shooting, Returns to Duty
Incident Involving 53-Year-Old Melanie Udell
After a thorough investigation, a Bismarck Police Department officer involved in the fatal shooting of 53-year-old Melanie Udell has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing and has returned to active duty.
The incident occurred earlier this year during a response to a critical situation in which officers were called to assist with a disturbance involving Udell. According to authorities, the encounter escalated rapidly, leading to the use of deadly force. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was brought in to conduct an independent review, and the findings determined that the officer’s actions were justified and within department policy.
The decision to clear the officer came after weeks of investigative work, including interviews, forensic analysis, and a review of body-worn camera footage. Officials stated that the evidence supported the conclusion that the officer responded in a manner consistent with training and law enforcement protocol under the circumstances.
Melanie Udell’s death remains a tragic outcome that has affected both her family and the wider community. While the officer has been reinstated, the department expressed its condolences to the Udell family and acknowledged the emotional impact the incident has had on all involved.
“This was a difficult situation for everyone,” said a spokesperson for the Bismarck Police Department. “Our thoughts remain with Ms. Udell’s loved ones, and we continue our commitment to transparency, accountability, and community trust.”
As the officer returns to duty, the department plans to engage in ongoing conversations with community leaders and residents, aiming to foster understanding and continue building positive relationships in the wake of this incident.
