Pilot Killed, Toddler Injured in Hinckley Plane Crash Identified by Authorities

HINCKLEY, Ill — A tragic plane crash near the Hinckley Airfield on Saturday afternoon has claimed the life of a local pilot and left a young child injured, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities confirmed that 51-year-old James Beyer, of Maple Park, Illinois, was the pilot of the small aircraft and was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred around 2:33 p.m. in a farm field just west of Hinckley Airfield, located along US-30 in DeKalb County.

Also on board was a 3-year-old passenger, a relative of Beyer, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. The child was first taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb before being transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago for further care. Officials have not released the child’s name but have confirmed the toddler’s condition is stable.

The aircraft involved was identified as a single-engine 1946 Aeronca 7AC, a light aircraft commonly used for recreational flying. The plane came down in a field adjacent to the airport, raising immediate questions about whether it was attempting to land or had just taken off. That detail remains under investigation.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. The wreckage remained on-site as investigators worked through Saturday evening to document and assess the scene.

At this time, authorities have not released any preliminary findings about the crash, and it remains unclear what caused the aircraft to go down so close to the airfield.

The community of Maple Park and the aviation circle around Hinckley are mourning the loss of James Beyer, described by those who knew him as a passionate and experienced pilot who enjoyed flying and spending time with family. Support has also poured in for the young child’s recovery.

More updates will be provided as investigators release additional details. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash is urged to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office or the NTSB.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for All of North Texas Until 9 PM

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for All of North Texas Until 9 PM

NORTH TEXAS – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the entire North Texas region until 9:00 PM today, as forecasters warn of the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and even isolated tornadoes throughout the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region ahead of a more organized line of storms anticipated to sweep through between 9 PM and 1 AM. These storms could produce hailstones up to golf ball size, wind gusts exceeding 60-70 mph, and brief tornadoes, particularly in isolated cells forming ahead of the main line.

Meteorologists caution that the most volatile window for severe weather will be during the late afternoon into evening, when instability and atmospheric dynamics align to support stronger storm development.

    Residents are strongly encouraged to:

    • Monitor local news and weather alerts regularly.
    • Have a reliable way to receive emergency warnings, such as a NOAA Weather Radio or a mobile weather app.
    • Secure any loose outdoor items that could become hazardous in strong winds.
    • Review severe weather safety plans and identify a safe place to shelter, particularly in the event of a tornado warning.

Travelers and commuters are advised to remain cautious, as sudden heavy rain, hail, and strong winds could create hazardous road conditions and reduce visibility.

Emergency officials stress that staying weather-aware and taking early precautions can make a significant difference during fast-developing severe weather situations.

Man in Serious Condition After Daylight Shooting in Waterbury

WATERBURY, Conn — A man is in serious but stable condition after being shot in broad daylight on Sunday, June 8, in Waterbury. Police say the victim was dropped off at Saint Mary’s Hospital shortly after 2:00 p.m., suffering from a gunshot wound. The incident has sparked an intense investigation and renewed concern from the community as gun violence continues to affect the city.

According to officials, the shooting took place in the area of Macauley Avenue and Pritchard Road, a neighborhood typically known for its quiet residential setting. It is still unclear whether the victim was shot while on foot or in a vehicle, and police have not yet identified a suspect or a possible motive.

The victim’s identity has not been released, but authorities say he remains under medical care in serious but stable condition. Detectives from the Waterbury Police Department were seen canvassing the area Sunday afternoon, speaking to neighbors and searching for surveillance footage that might provide leads in the case. Officers also collected physical evidence at the scene, including shell casings, though the exact number of shots fired has not been disclosed.

This incident marks yet another act of gun violence that has shaken Waterbury residents in recent months. Community members voiced frustration and sadness at the growing number of violent events, many of which are taking place during daytime hours and in residential areas where children and families live.

“This is terrifying,” said one local resident who asked not to be named. “We need more patrols, more community engagement — something to stop these shootings before someone else’s child or parent is taken.”

City leaders and anti-violence advocates echoed that sentiment, calling for continued support for intervention programs and youth outreach, especially as summer begins — a time when cities often see spikes in violent crime.

Waterbury Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area of Macauley Avenue and Pritchard Road around the time of the shooting to come forward. Any witnesses, surveillance footage, or tips — even anonymous — could prove critical in helping investigators determine who is responsible.

Tips can be directed to the Waterbury Police Department Detective Bureau at (203) 574-6941 or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

As the victim continues to fight for recovery, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting may be linked to other recent incidents, and they are working with nearby jurisdictions to determine whether there are any related patterns.

Authorities urge the public to remain aware and cautious, and to contact police if they observe suspicious behavior or hear gunshots in their neighborhoods.
