Ascension Parish, LA – A deadly shooting on Interstate 10 early Sunday morning has left one person dead and several others injured, prompting swift action from local authorities. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) has announced the arrest of a 19-year-old suspect, with investigators expecting additional arrests in the coming days.
According to APSO, the violent incident is believed to have stemmed from an escalating dispute among local youth that culminated in gunfire erupting on the interstate. Jakiryn Johnson, 19, has been taken into custody by the APSO Violent Crimes Unit and is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder.
The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, causing chaos and temporary closure of parts of I-10 as emergency crews responded to the scene. Authorities reported that multiple vehicles were involved and several individuals sustained injuries ranging in severity. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This was not a random act of violence,” said Sheriff Bobby Webre. “We believe this was a targeted attack that followed a night of growing tensions between several individuals. Our investigators are working around the clock to bring all those involved to justice.”
Detectives say more suspects are being identified, and arrests are expected in the near future as the investigation continues to unfold. APSO is urging anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward.
“Our top priority is the safety of our community,” added Sheriff Webre. “We will not tolerate this kind of reckless violence in Ascension Parish.”
As the investigation remains active, further details—including the identities of the victims—have not been released pending notification of family members. Authorities continue to process evidence and interview witnesses in hopes of gaining a clearer picture of the events leading up to the tragic shooting.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to report any relevant information by contacting the Violent Crimes Unit or submitting tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
