Aiken County Man Dies from Injuries Sustained in Old Barnwell Road Wreck
Aiken County, S.C. – A Windsor man has died from injuries suffered in a crash that occurred a week earlier on Old Barnwell Road, authorities confirmed.
Wade Sweat III, 42, was critically injured on the morning of June 2 when his 1994 Chevrolet truck crashed in the 1400 block of Old Barnwell Road near Stillwater Road. According to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables, the vehicle veered off the left side of the road, overcorrected, then left the right side of the road before overturning and striking a fence.
Emergency crews responded swiftly and transported Sweat to Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta, where he remained hospitalized in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, June 9, at 5:45 p.m.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation in coordination with the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Sweat is being remembered by friends and family as a kind-hearted man with a deep bond to those closest to him. In a tribute posted online, longtime friend Danni Curr shared the heartbreak of losing someone so dear.
“You held on as long as you could,” she wrote. “The day of your accident was one of the worst days of my life. I walked up to your truck and saw you—my heart stopped. Our relationship was different than everyone else’s. We were best friends. I’m going to take care of your sister. Please watch over us. This life isn’t going to be the same without you in it.”
Funeral arrangements for Sweat have not yet been announced.
