COFFEYVILLE MAN DIES IN COLLISION ON RURAL ROAD
Coffeyville, Kansas — A tragic collision on a rural Montgomery County road has claimed the life of 22-year-old Wyatt T. Johnson, a resident of Coffeyville, leaving the community heartbroken and mourning the sudden loss of a young life.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday afternoon, just north of the Coffeyville Country Club, on County Road 4300. According to a preliminary report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2012 Freightliner commercial truck driven by Derek A. Taggart, 38, of Altamont, was traveling southbound when he attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway.
At the same time, Johnson was approaching from the opposite direction, riding a 1998 Honda V75 motorcycle in the northbound lane. As Taggart initiated the turn, Johnson’s motorcycle struck the left front side of the truck, resulting in a violent impact.
Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene, and Johnson was transported to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, where he was sadly pronounced dead.
Taggart was uninjured in the incident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s report also noted that Johnson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash — a detail that underscores the importance of motorcycle safety and protective gear, particularly in high-risk areas such as rural roadways.
