Tragedy Strikes on Easter Night: Ruston Mourns Deontrell Marquis Hunter
On what should have been a peaceful Easter evening, tragedy unfolded in Ruston, Louisiana, as gunfire shattered the night outside a local barbershop. At approximately 10 p.m., the calm of the holiday was broken by a burst of violence at Y2 Kuts, leaving one man dead and four others wounded—victims, police say, of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Deontrell Marquis Hunter lost his life in those devastating moments. He lay dying just outside the barbershop doors, his final breaths taken amidst chaos and heartbreak. Deontrell’s life was ended in seconds, leaving behind grieving family, friends, and a community now grappling with another senseless act of violence.
Four others, whose identities have not yet been released, were also struck by gunfire and are recovering from their injuries. Each is a living reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life can be.
Ruston Police have named 23-year-old Zyheim T. Butcher as the suspect in the shooting. He is currently wanted for one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward, as the search for justice intensifies.
What began as a quiet evening turned into a scene of sirens, sorrow, and disbelief—a night that will forever remain in the hearts of those who witnessed it and those who mourn.
To Deontrell’s loved ones, we offer our most sincere condolences. May you find strength in one another and solace in the many lives touched by his presence. May justice be served, and may healing begin.
