Bay Head, New Jersey — With deep sorrow and immense respect, the Bay Head Fire Department announces the passing of Life Member Jeffrey R. Applegate, a man whose name became synonymous with service, integrity, and community dedication. Jeffrey passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy built on more than 60 years of tireless and selfless service to the department and the people of Bay Head, New Jersey.
Jeffrey R. Applegate was more than just a firefighter—he was the embodiment of what it means to serve with heart and humility. His unwavering commitment to public safety, his loyalty to his fellow firefighters, and his enduring love for the Bay Head community defined a lifetime of devotion. From his earliest days with the department, Jeffrey demonstrated a remarkable sense of duty, showing up not only when he was needed, but also when others needed him most.
Over the span of six decades, Jeffrey saw the department through significant changes and challenges. He was there for fires, floods, hurricanes, rescues, and community events—always ready, always steady. His calm demeanor under pressure and deep well of knowledge made him a mentor to generations of firefighters who followed in his footsteps. Whether on the scene of an emergency or in the firehouse offering advice, Jeffrey was a steadying presence whose wisdom and quiet leadership earned the respect of all who had the privilege of serving beside him.
His contributions extended far beyond emergency calls. Jeffrey was a fixture in community life—participating in fundraisers, holiday events, safety demonstrations, and local initiatives. He believed that service didn’t end when the uniform came off. His impact was felt in every handshake, every story shared at the firehouse, and every young recruit he guided along the way.
“Jeff was more than just a Life Member—he was the heart of this department,” said a fellow firefighter. “His devotion, humility, and love for Bay Head were unmatched. He never asked for recognition, but he deserved all of it and more.”
The Bay Head Fire Department, along with the entire community, mourns the loss of one of its most treasured members. Flags at the firehouse will be flown at half-mast in his honor, and plans for a memorial service to celebrate Jeffrey’s life and service will be shared with the public in the coming days.
To his family, we offer our most heartfelt condolences. Your loss is shared by all of us who called Jeffrey a friend, mentor, and brother. The sacrifices he made and the life he led will never be forgotten.
As we say goodbye to a man who gave so much of himself to his community, we reflect with gratitude on the strength of his character and the depth of his service.
Rest in peace, Jeffrey R. Applegate. Your legacy of courage, dedication, and service will live on in the heart of Bay Head and the spirit of every firefighter who carries your torch.
