Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of Deputy Ryan Phillips in Tragic Crash

DETROIT, MI — June 7, 2025 — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Deputy Ryan Phillips, who tragically lost his life in a fiery crash early Saturday morning on the Lodge Freeway.

The fatal accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Northbound M-10 near Chicago Boulevard. According to the preliminary investigation by the Michigan State Police, Deputy Phillips was driving an SUV northbound when his vehicle veered off the roadway, climbed an embankment, struck a tree, and rolled back onto the freeway. The vehicle then caught fire, prompting immediate calls to emergency services from passing motorists.

Tragically, Deputy Phillips, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved, and there were no additional injuries reported.

“We are reminding drivers to wear their seatbelts,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw of MSP. “Not only will it keep you behind the wheel, but it will also keep you inside the vehicle if it rolls over. This crash remains under investigation pending the results of the medical examiner’s report.”

Deputy Phillips, just 25 years old, was off duty at the time of the incident. He is remembered as a dedicated public servant who approached his role in law enforcement with courage, professionalism, and compassion. His passing is a devastating loss not only for his family and friends but for the entire law enforcement community.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying, “Deputy Phillips embodied the values of our department—honor, integrity, and service. We are heartbroken by his loss and ask the community to keep his loved ones in their thoughts during this extremely difficult time.”

As the investigation continues, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police urge all drivers to buckle up every time they get behind the wheel.

Deputy Ryan Phillips’ legacy of service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
