OPELIKA, Ala. — A community is grieving after 16-year-old Jamiyah Grant was shot and killed during a gathering at Bandy Park in Opelika on Saturday night, June 7. The tragedy unfolded around 8:30 p.m., turning what should have been an ordinary evening into a night of devastating loss.
According to the Opelika Police Department, an argument broke out among a group of people at the park. That argument quickly escalated, and multiple gunshots rang out. Jamiyah, a young girl full of promise and potential, was struck by the gunfire.
In a desperate attempt to flee the scene, she got into a vehicle and tried to drive away, but collided with another car nearby. First responders arrived to find her critically injured. She was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
On Sunday, June 8, police arrested 18-year-old Timothy Shell Jr., of Union Springs, and charged him with murder in connection with Jamiyah’s death. Detectives identified Shell as the suspected shooter during their initial investigation and quickly moved to take him into custody.
“This is a heartbreaking and senseless loss,” an Opelika police spokesperson said. “A young life was taken far too soon, and we are committed to pursuing justice on behalf of Jamiyah and her family.”
The case remains active, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses. Authorities urge anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward.
