101st Airborne Division Mourns Loss of Soldier in Hungary Training Accident
FORT CAMPBELL, KY — The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is mourning the loss of one of its own following a tragic training accident near Camp Croft, Hungary, on June 5, 2025.
The soldier has been identified as Sgt. Aaron Cox, a 24-year-old Infantryman from Mabank, Texas, who was assigned to the “Strike” 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team (2MBCT), 101st Airborne Division.
According to military officials, the accident occurred during a multinational training exercise being conducted in partnership with NATO allies. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and the Army is working closely with local authorities to determine the cause.
Brig. Gen. Matthew B. Powell, commander of the 2MBCT, expressed his condolences in a statement:
“Sgt. Aaron Cox was a dedicated and courageous soldier who embodied the values of the 101st. His commitment to his mission and his fellow soldiers was unwavering, and his loss is deeply felt by every member of the Strike Brigade.”
Sgt. Cox enlisted in the Army in 2019 and had served with distinction, including one deployment overseas. Fellow soldiers described him as a selfless leader, a loyal friend, and someone who always brought a sense of calm under pressure.
A memorial ceremony will be held at Fort Campbell to honor Sgt. Cox’s service and sacrifice. Funeral arrangements are pending, and the Army has extended support to his family during this time of profound grief.
The U.S. Army continues to emphasize its commitment to safety during training operations and is conducting a thorough review of the incident.
Sgt. Aaron Cox is survived by his parents, siblings, and a tight-knit community in Mabank that remembers him as a humble, hardworking young man with a strong sense of duty.
