DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A routine response to a call turned into a deadly tragedy early Tuesday morning when two deputies were ambushed inside a home on Old Times Court, leaving one officer dead and another injured. The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office has identified the fallen deputy as Devin Mason, 27, a newly certified officer who had just completed his field training.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., as deputies attempted to apprehend a wanted suspect. Upon entering the residence, the deputies were met with gunfire. Deputy Mason was fatally shot, and a second deputy sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital and is now in stable condition.
The shooter, identified as Cameron Ry Dennett, 25, was also killed during the exchange. Authorities say Dennett was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior felony convictions. He was wanted on multiple charges, including Criminal Conspiracy, Forgery, and Computer Crimes (2nd Degree). A female suspect who was also wanted and present in the home was arrested at the scene.
In a statement filled with grief, Sheriff James Hudson August addressed the press and community:
“Today, we mourn the loss of one of our own, Deputy Devin Mason. This is an incredibly sad day for Devin’s family, for the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, and for the community we proudly serve.”
Deputy Mason joined the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in 2024 and had graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy on March 28, 2025. He had just completed field training last week and had only recently begun serving on his own.
“In his short time with us, Devin showed unwavering dedication, integrity, and professionalism,” Sheriff August said. “He wore the badge with pride and served with heart. Though his time in uniform was brief, the impact he made will last forever.”
As news of Deputy Mason’s death spread, support poured in from law enforcement agencies across the state, as well as from citizens mourning the loss of a young man who stepped up to serve and protect.
The investigation into the ambush is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details on how the confrontation unfolded. Additional charges may be filed as evidence is reviewed.
A memorial service for Deputy Devin Mason will be announced in the coming days. The Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to keep the Mason family, the injured deputy, and all first responders in their thoughts and prayers.
“Rest easy, Deputy Mason,” said Sheriff August. “We have the watch from here.”
