Muscatine Hy-Vee Shooting: Victim and Suspect Identified

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Authorities have identified the individuals involved in a fatal shooting that took place Monday afternoon at the 2nd Avenue Hy-Vee in Muscatine.

Police say 37-year-old Kalista Hallberg, of Letts, Iowa, was shot and killed inside the store just before 2 p.m. The suspected shooter, Ian Hernandez, of Davenport, fled the scene in a red minivan immediately after the incident.

Law enforcement quickly located the suspect’s vehicle near the intersection of Highway 61 and Highway 38. Officers found Hernandez inside the van with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was administered emergency medical aid on the scene before being transported to University of Iowa Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have determined the shooting was the result of an ongoing domestic dispute between Hallberg and Hernandez.

The Hy-Vee store and nearby intersections were temporarily closed to the public following the shooting. A Hy-Vee spokesperson confirmed the store will reopen at 7 a.m. Tuesday, once it is fully cleaned and prepared for customers.

This tragic event has shaken the Muscatine community. Authorities continue to investigate, and more details may be released as the situation develops.
