Muscatine, Iowa — The city of Muscatine is reeling after a tragic shooting inside the Hy-Vee grocery store on 2nd Avenue claimed the life of a local woman and left the community in shock. The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, when Muscatine Police received multiple reports of gunshots inside the busy store.
Upon arrival, officers found 37-year-old Kalista Hallberg, of Letts, Iowa, fatally wounded from multiple gunshot injuries. Despite the swift emergency response, Hallbery was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Ian Hernandez, a resident of Davenport, Iowa, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police later discovered him unresponsive in his vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that he was not being pursued at the time and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Muscatine Police Chief Tony Kies addressed the public shortly after the incident:
“This is a heartbreaking and senseless tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and assure the public that the situation is under control. The store will remain closed until investigators finish processing the scene and it is safe to reopen.”
A Community in Mourning
The loss of Kalista Hallbery has sent shockwaves through both Muscatine and her hometown of Letts. Described by friends as kind, compassionate, and full of life, Hallbery’s death has left a deep void. Community members are planning a candlelight vigil in her memory and have rallied to support her grieving loved ones.
Hy-Vee Responds
In a statement, Hy-Vee expressed sorrow over the tragic events:
“This has been an incredibly difficult day for the Muscatine community. We are heartbroken over the loss of life at our store. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and offering support to our employees and the victim’s family during this time of grief.”
The company has confirmed the store will remain closed until further notice to allow for a full investigation and ensure a safe and respectful reopening.
