PHILIPPI, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has confirmed that 19-year-old Dustin Nixon of Clarksburg tragically lost his life in a drowning incident at Tygart Lake on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the lake after reports of a possible drowning. After hours of searching, Dustin’s body was recovered around 7 p.m. Sunday evening. Authorities have not released further details surrounding the circumstances of the incident, and the official cause of death remains pending as investigators await results from the medical examiner.
Captain David James of the West Virginia Natural Resources Police District 1 described the event as a heartbreaking tragedy, one all too familiar during the summer season.
“Summer months, we always have tragedies like this,” said Captain James. “It’s a shame, but I hope the family does well and that some closure was brought to them by the quick response from all EMS and law enforcement agencies involved.”
Multiple emergency responders worked tirelessly in the recovery efforts, including local EMS teams and officers from surrounding jurisdictions.
Dustin Nixon, remembered by friends and family as a kind and genuine young man, had his whole life ahead of him. His unexpected passing has left a deep wound in the Clarksburg community.
