On Sunday, April 27, 2025, at approximately 2:11 a.m., officers from the local police department were dispatched to the 800 block of Barry Street following reports of a drive-by shooting. What unfolded was a harrowing incident that could have ended in tragedy but instead concluded with a swift and successful arrest of 24-Year-Old Suspect

Upon arrival at the scene, officers made contact with the victim, a 16-year-old male, who recounted the terrifying encounter. According to the victim, he had been walking home alone when a white passenger vehicle approached him. As the car slowed next to him, a male occupant inside suddenly opened fire, discharging multiple rounds in his direction before speeding away into a neighboring residential complex.

Fortunately, the teen was not struck by the gunfire and was physically unharmed. He immediately sought help and was able to provide responding officers with crucial information regarding the suspect and the vehicle involved.

Acting quickly, officers canvassed the area and soon located the white vehicle parked inside the nearby complex, matching the description provided by the victim. As they continued their investigation, officers were able to trace the suspect to an apartment within the complex. Upon making contact and conducting a further search, officers identified and arrested 24-year-old Xavier Ybanez.

Ybanez was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During the arrest, officers also successfully recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.

Authorities praised the victim’s composure under duress and the quick work of responding officers, whose prompt action led to the swift identification and arrest of the suspect. “This could have easily resulted in the loss of a young life,” a department spokesperson said. “Thanks to the bravery of the victim and the diligence of our officers, we were able to prevent further violence and remove a dangerous individual from the streets.”

The arrest has brought a measure of relief to residents of the Barry Street area, many of whom have voiced growing concerns about rising acts of violence in recent months. Community leaders are urging continued cooperation between citizens and law enforcement, emphasizing that vigilance and swift reporting can make a life-saving difference.

As of Sunday afternoon, Xavier Ybanez remains in custody. Additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues, including potential weapons offenses related to the possession and use of the firearm.

Police are encouraging anyone with additional information about the incident or Xavier Ybanez’s activities prior to the shooting to contact the local police department’s tip line. Investigators are especially interested in speaking with any witnesses who may have seen the white vehicle in the vicinity before or after the shooting.

Meanwhile, the young victim is recovering from the emotional shock of the event, surrounded by family and a supportive community thankful that he escaped the terrifying ordeal unharmed.

This incident stands as a powerful reminder of how senseless violence can affect even the most innocent moments, and how essential it is for communities to come together to ensure safety and accountability.
