Elizabeth City State University; Suspect Identified as Alvin Crespin

The violence erupted just after midnight during a large gathering near a campus residential hall, according to the Elizabeth City Police Department. Authorities responded swiftly to multiple reports of gunfire, arriving on the scene to find chaos and panic among students and attendees.

Seven victims, all believed to be young adults, were located and transported to nearby hospitals. Sadly, one individual succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. The identities of the deceased and injured have not yet been officially released pending family notifications.

After an intensive overnight investigation, police named Alvin Crespin as the suspect. Preliminary information suggests that Crespin, who is not an ECSU student, had an altercation during the event that escalated into violence. Law enforcement officials say they are actively searching for Crespin, who is considered armed and dangerous. Warrants for his arrest have been issued, and a multi-agency manhunt is currently underway.

In a statement early Sunday morning, ECSU Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event. “Our hearts are broken by the violence that has shaken our campus community,” she said. “We are mourning the life lost and praying for the recovery of those who were injured. We are committed to ensuring the safety of our students and are working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues.”

Classes have been canceled for the coming days, and grief counselors have been made available to students, faculty, and staff struggling with the emotional impact of the tragedy. A candlelight vigil is also being organized by student leaders to honor the victims and offer a space for collective mourning.

Local and state officials have also weighed in, expressing shock and sadness over the shooting and pledging resources to assist in the investigation and campus recovery efforts.

Elizabeth City Police Chief Eddie Buffaloe urged anyone with information about Crespin’s whereabouts to come forward. “This is a devastating event for the ECSU community and our city as a whole,” Buffaloe said. “We are doing everything we can to bring the suspect to justice and to support the victims and their families.”

Authorities have asked that anyone with information contact the Elizabeth City Police Department immediately at (252) 335-4321 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

As Elizabeth City mourns this senseless act of violence, the community stands united in grief and determination — mourning the life that was lost, supporting the injured, and seeking justice for all those affected.
