Search Continues for Missing 12-Year-Old Kollin Showwalter After Tragic Train Accident on Neosho River Bridge
NEOSHO COUNTY, Kan. — A tight-knit Kansas community is gripped with grief and holding on to hope as the search continues for 12-year-old Kollin Showwalter, who went missing after a devastating train accident on a trestle bridge over the Neosho River near Erie on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Kollin, a resident of Erie, and 16-year-old Arthur Pollries of Walnut were on the train bridge south of town when they were tragically struck by an oncoming train. The two boys were reportedly attempting to run across the bridge when the train approached, leaving them little time to escape.
Emergency crews responded immediately to the tragic scene. Arthur’s body was recovered shortly after the incident, sending waves of sorrow through both Erie and Walnut. As of Thursday evening, crews were still searching the river and surrounding areas for any sign of Kollin.
Community in Mourning, Holding Out Hope
The loss and uncertainty have cast a heavy shadow over the area. Families, friends, and neighbors have gathered near the river, many joining rescue crews in volunteer efforts, offering support and comfort during the ongoing search.
“Kollin is a bright, adventurous, and kind-hearted kid,” said one family friend. “We’re praying for a miracle. No one is giving up.”
Kollin was a student at Erie Middle School and was known for his energetic spirit and love of the outdoors. News of the accident has shaken classmates, teachers, and the broader school district, which is offering counseling and emotional support for grieving students and staff.

Multiple agencies, including local fire departments, KHP, and water rescue teams, have been working tirelessly to locate Kollin. Drones, boats, sonar equipment, and K9 teams are being used to scour the Neosho River and its banks, though challenging terrain and strong currents have complicated recovery efforts.
Officials have urged the public to avoid the area while operations are underway, asking instead for prayers and support for Kollin’s loved ones.
