18-Year-Old Joe Anthony Identified as Victim Killed in Sweet 16 Mass Shooting in Southeast Houston

Houston, TX – An 18-year-old man with a bright future and a heart full of love has been identified as the sole fatality in the tragic Sweet 16 mass shooting that devastated a Southeast Houston community early Sunday morning. Joe Anthony, affectionately known as “Joey” by his family and friends, lost his life after a hail of gunfire erupted during what was meant to be a joyful celebration on Cherryhill Street.

The shooting occurred just before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2025, when an uninvited guest to the birthday party was asked to leave. Instead of walking away peacefully, the suspect opened fire into the crowd, turning the celebration into chaos. According to the Houston Police Department, others in attendance returned gunfire, creating a dangerously volatile and unpredictable scene.

Police say they were met with ongoing gunfire as they arrived at the scene. Victims were found scattered across various locations surrounding the house, and additional 911 calls about gunshots continued to pour in as officers attempted to secure the area. A triage was quickly set up nearby at a Jack in the Box on Long Street near Loop 610, where Houston Fire Department medics provided care to the injured.

In total, 15 people were injured, ranging in age from 16 to 40 years old, while Joe Anthony tragically succumbed to his injuries. Some victims were rushed to hospitals in ambulances, while others were taken in private vehicles. The current conditions of the survivors have not yet been publicly released.

A Life Full of Promise

Joe Anthony’s death has left a profound void in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Described by family as the “life of every room,” Joey was known for his quick wit, contagious smile, and kind heart. He had recently graduated high school and had completed a program in welding school, setting the foundation for a promising career. In fact, Joey was scheduled to begin a new job this week—an opportunity he had been looking forward to with great pride.

Beyond his career aspirations, Joey played a central role in his family. As the second oldest of seven brothers, he was often seen as a role model and mentor to his siblings. He was especially thrilled about the upcoming birth of the family’s first baby girl, a niece he was eagerly awaiting and had already started shopping for. His family says he had a heart of gold and a personality that lifted others up, even in difficult times.

“Joey was more than a nephew, brother, or friend—he was our sunshine,” said one family member. “He had this way of making everyone feel special. He was goofy, lovable, and determined. It’s impossible to imagine our lives without him.”

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, no official arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, but multiple individuals have been detained for questioning. Detectives are still working to identify all parties involved and are investigating whether the gunfire exchange was related to gang activity, personal disputes, or other motives.

Authorities continue to urge witnesses or anyone with footage or information to step forward. Those who wish to assist are encouraged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS (8477).

A Call for Support and Peace

In the wake of this devastating loss, Joey’s family has launched a fundraiser to assist with funeral costs and to help support his younger siblings, who are struggling to process the loss of their beloved brother. Community leaders and city officials are also calling for unity and reflection, as senseless violence continues to plague local neighborhoods.

“Too many young lives are being stolen by gun violence,” said a community advocate. “We must do better—for Joey, and for every family who has had to mourn like this.”

As Houston mourns another life lost too soon, the memory of Joe Anthony will live on through the stories, smiles, and dreams he shared with all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Joey. You were deeply loved and will never be forgotten
